SUSTAINABLE TOURISM
ENTRUST is particularly interested in integrating local communities and MSMEs in the value chain of sustainable tourism, thereby maximizing the benefits tourism brings to the Egyptian economy. Under the LIFE Red Sea project, ENTRUST was commissioned to conduct a study of the tourist resorts in the Southern Red Sea region to assess the potential of incorporating the local community in various touristic activities. The study was complemented by another study that ENTRUST conducted of the case of the eco-tourism resort of Basata. In addition ENTRUST advised the project on ways and means to maximize the integration of the indigenous population in tourism activities. Furthermore, ENTRUST facilitated the establishment of the Syndicate of Cultural Handicrafts Artisans in El-Darb El Ahmar district in Fatimid Cairo and supported its activities and operations. Through ENTRUST’s assistance, the syndicate participated in the deliberations leading to the formulation of Egypt’s current Constitution. Due to the Syndicate’s input the Constitution came to include an article on the role of the state in promoting and supporting Egypt’s cultural heritage as reflected in artisanal products.
